Monsoon Session Day 3 | Opposition parties protest: Parliament adjourned till noon

New Delhi: The third day of the monsoon session of Parliament, Wednesday, saw both Houses adjourned till noon amid protests by opposition parties.

The Lok Sabha session began with opposition MPs shouting slogans demanding a discussion on the special revision of voter lists in Bihar and Operation Sindoor, among other issues. Speaker Om Birla urged the protesters to maintain decency. But as the noise continued, he adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon after opposition members disrupted the proceedings demanding a discussion on the special revision of voter lists in Bihar.

Government is the biggest beneficiary when Parliament is not functioning: Derek O'Brien

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O'Brien criticised the government for disrupting the proceedings of Parliament, saying the central government is the biggest beneficiary when Parliament is not functioning.

He posted on his X account that the central government has wasted two days of the session. When Parliament is not functioning, who benefits? The government in power. The government is accountable to Parliament; Parliament is accountable to the people. When Parliament is inactive, the government is accountable to no one.

O'Brien shared a link to a blog post in which he said that the monsoon session is scheduled for a total of 190 hours, of which 70 per cent is reserved for government business. Opposition MPs will be given half the time for Question Hour and zero hour instructions, giving them 31 hours to raise matters of public interest.

Four hours should be set aside in each House every week to allow for debates on matters of urgent public importance. An additional two hours should be set aside for attention-grabbing motions. This would revise the allocation to 117 hours for government business and 49 hours for the opposition, he wrote.
